Grassroots Justice: The Philippines
SOROS - Open Society Foundations
Across southeast Asia, indigenous communities often lack formal legal title to their ancestral lands. As a result, traditional holdings can face expropriation and encroachment by business interests or by the state. Law groups on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines have responded by helping indigenous groups use the power of the law to protect the land they rightfully own.

Plantwise Puducherry: India
For CAB International
There are over 500 million smallholder farmers in the world, working to feed 2 billion people. That's one third of the world's population depending on the health of plants. And yet each year an estimated 40% of crops are lost to pests and diseases before they can even be harvested.
Farmers in Puducherry, India where Valli Thakaswamy lives and works have always faced challenges. With an increasingly variable climate and the growing risk of extreme weather such as cyclones and flooding, new and worsening pest outbreaks are becoming a problem which can seem insurmountable. Valli’s rice paddy crop was wiped out by an unknown disease following Cyclone Thane. Although she borrowed money to purchase more seeds and fertilizers for the next season, again the yellowing of the leaves returned. She didn’t know what was wrong, or how to fight back. As her crop dried up, she was having trouble supporting her family as the income, too, dried up. Then Valli heard about a nearby plant clinic run through the MSSR Foundation and decided to go and see what they could do. Watch the video to hear from Valli about her Plantwise experience and what happened next.

Across the Himalaya: India
For SONY
Edited by Panos Pictures

Sony Action Cam is proud to partner Panos Pictures photographers Suzanne Lee and Sanjit Das for a motorcycle expedition across the Himalayas. Riding on their Royal Enfield motorcycles, the team explored the Valley of Ladakh, India, known to be one of the world’s highest motorable road.
“It was an incredible experience being able to handle a tiny camera that packed such a big punch. The Sony Action Cam was impressively durable and easy to operate. Documenting a motorcycling trip through the world’s highest motorable road while wearing protective gear is only possible with a sturdily-built camera and Sony has most definitely lived up to the challenge. Through torrential rain and snow, hail and sand storms, and adverse weather and altitude changes - the camera handled them perfectly.”
